Financing for Development, Doha: Time for Change: Building a New Global Economic Architecture

South Centre was represented by Yash Tandon, the Executive Director and Vikas Nath, Head - Media and Communications at the Financing for Development Conference held in Doha, Qatar from 29 November - 2 December 2008.

Time for Change: Building a New Global Economic Architecture

This South Centre organised side event was held on 30 November and was attended by over 60 participants. The panelists included Mr. Pedro Páez Pérez, Minister for Economic Policy Coordination of Ecuador and President of the Ecuadorian Presidential Commission for the New Regional Financial Architecture-Banco del Sur, and Mr. Jomo Kwame Sundaram, UN Assistant Secretary-General and Research Director, Intergovernmental Group of Twenty-Four (G-24) along with Dr. Yash Tandon.

The financial crisis which started with the US and then got “globalised” through inter-bank collaterised securities is not a product of “severe market disruption but endemic to the present system of capitalism, as part of its inner logic.

It is imperative that the South decouples itself from the crisis-prone institutions of the North and looks towards other alternative solutions than those provided by the existing global economic architecture.

Integrating human rights in financing for development

Mr. Vice Yu, Coordinator - Global Governance for Development, South Centre presented his views on "Enhancing The Coherence And Consistency Of The International Monetary, Financial And Trading Systems In Support Of Development" at the workshop on Integrating human rights in financing for development.

The workshop was organized by th eOffice of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in conjunction with the Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Network (ESCR-Net) and the Center of Concern (CoC) in Geneva from 15-17 September 2008.

New York: Review Meeting of Doha Outcome Document

Irfan ul Haque, Special Advisor Finance and Development, South Centre participated in the Meeting on Preliminary Review of the Doha Outcome Document organized by the G77 and South Centre in New York on 4 August 2008.

South Centre organizes side-event to the UN High-Level Dialogue on Financing for Development in New York

On Monday, 22 October 2007, the South Centre, together with the Permanent Mission of Tanzania to the UN in New York, the UN Financing for Development Office (UNFFDO), and the Centre for International Cooperation in Development and Solidarity (CIDSE), held a side-event to the UN High-Level Dialogue on Financing for Development that took place on 23-24 October 2007 at UN Headquarters in New York.

The side-event titled "Selected Issues on Financing for Development: South-North Capital Flows and Innovative Sources of Financing." Speakers included Prof. Yash Tandon, Executive Director of the South Centre; Mr. Vicente Paolo Yu, Programme Coordinator for Global Governance at the South Centre; Mr. Sergio Marelli of CIDSE; and HE Ambassador Monsignor Celestino Migliori, Permanent Representative of the Holy See to the UN in New York. The Chairman of the Panel was Mr. Aldo Caliari of the Center of Concern. The side-event was attended by representatives from developing country delegations and some civil society organizations.

South Centre Event: South-North Capital Flows and the search for Innovative Sources of Finance (22 October)

South Centre in partnership with CIDSE/Centre of Concern is organizing an invitation-only panel event in New York on 22 October 2007 on South-North Capital Flows and the search for Innovative Sources of Finance. The Event seeks to present and discuss some ideas with developing country delegations working on Financing for Development issues in the context of the 2008 Review Conference for the Monterrey Consensus.

The results of policy research currently being undertaken by the co-organizers will be discussed with developing country delegations, and the Event will highlight some topical issues that might be relevant and of use to developing country delegations in the context of their preparations for the 2008 Review Conference and the 23-24 October 2007 High Level Dialogue on Financing for Development.
